The early roots of the organization came to be in a Manhattan Diner in 1987. The architect was William Fenty Jr. DCH a NYPD Borough Lieutenant, in collaboration with the Legendary Monsignor John J. He served in the US ARMY in Germany and Korea, and multiple tours in Vietnam and achieved the rank of Colonel, with multiple commendations and decorations as well as legion of Merit, he was also special Papal Nunzio. Monsignor was said to have the ear of the Pope and the Pentagon. He had the background to understand organizational politics and the ability to bring people together for common purpose. In the spirt one of his most favored groups the NYPD, and over a Pastrami sandwich the foundations of Police Surgeons Benevolent Association were formed. In 1996 recruitment began for what is now known as the PSBA. Upon his passing in September of 1988. History
The Police Surgeons Benevolent Association is dedicated to the support and advancement of local law enforcement, fire and rescue. As leading health care practitioners in our community, our association publicly acknowledges our debt to the professionalism of all First Responders as they fulfill their responsibilities in often dangerous and “life threatening” circumstances. Founded in 1996, the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association as a (not for profit) corporation was formed with the mission to provide medical assistance to police officers and their families. Through a network of over 150 physicians and other health care professionals, the P.S.B.A. has volunteered their professional services by way of health fairs, medical screening services and countless other medical services for all first responders and their families. After September 11, 2001, our members administered medical assistance to rescue workers at ground zero. As the increased fear of chemical and biological threats grew, we organized a series of lectures with North Shore Health System on recognizing, responding and treating attacks utilizing Weapons of Mass Destruction. These lectures were attended by local and State police department personnel as well as physicians and various health care and rescue workers. Over the past seven years the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association has continue to grow in various directions. When called upon, our members came to the aid of severely injured police offices injured in the line of duty. Working side by side their local Police Benevolent Association, the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association coordinated large fundraising events solely for the benefit of those injured officers, which to date has raised over $800.000. The PSBA is in the forefront of new and innovative volunteer medical plans to assist in the health and wellbeing of the members of our communities. The PSBA is also serving through our Veterinary members is forming an ambulance to assist the search dogs and all other police dogs that may need veterinary treatment. We affirm our commitment to the rule of Law and the vital role in saving lives, as we pledge ourselves to a just society that recognizes the demands of civic responsibility and service. In order to fulfill these aims, our Association pledges itself to charitable community work to support police and emergency rescue families and children. “ I have been happy to see such a great organization achieve so much. I never expected that the organization would impact so many, Monsignor J.J. Kowsky would be proud”
William P. Fenty JR DCH (LT.NYPD Ret.)
